Sienna Raeleon

Of the Silver Forest

The pale woman curled protectively around her as the night wind whipped at their frail bodies, her own so much smaller than the lady's. Wide, frightened gold eyes stared up at the lady's elegant but thin face, the violet eyes smiling down at her with the soft, thinned lips.

"You'll be alright, precious one, " the lady murmured and hugged her close, then leaned her forehead against the child's, eye to eye. Her breath made clouds of grey upon the air as she spoke, matching the moonlight silver of the hair streaming down her back. The golden child shivered.

"Remember what I told you, little one.." The lady's smile was weak as her breaths seemed fainter. "Help will be along in a while.. but I need to sleep." Her eyelids drooped. "I'll sing you to sleep as well." A tear fell from the violet eye as she sang softly, her voice melodic and beautiful against the background of night. The child's eyelids closed. The lady leaned down to kiss her cheek, and whispered softly in her ear even as she herself faded, wilting.

"Be good, my Sienna..sweet dreams.."

"No!" Sienna bolted upright in her bed, skin clammy and damp as she fought, tangled in the furs. Tears poured down her face as she began to relax, agile hands coming up over her featurs, hiding them from the room as she sobbed silently in her nightly ritual.

"Mother.."

~*~

So close, yet so far. Her mother's name had been Riela, those who came along too late to help had informed her in later years, showing her the scrap of paper on which her dying plea had been written. Her father hadn't been mentioned, and she didn't remember him well - only fleeting glimpses of a tallish, dark haired elf looking at her mother with an unreadable emotion as they moved in opposite directions. She had liked the look of him, though, and perhaps in an alternate dimension the two had had more than a glimpsed relationship.

The pair of scouts that found her took her in as their own child, and with them, she came to know the Silver Forest well enough to navigate it without any troubles. In time, they discovered she could change her shape at will, and often she would vanish for days, exploring on her own, then coming back to them. Eventually, she found her way into the scouting ranks of the Forest, and through it made her path. She has lost touch with the other elves she's around, and usually tries not to spend too much time in their company.

Afraid to trust or care again, the nightmare stalks her. They call her arrogant, prideful, and thee like, but she's not - or doesn't mean to be. Sienna's only hiding from a world she was thrown into and never came to understand. Her wild streak streams from the nature she so adores to be a part of, and she can't forsee herself ever being gentled by anyone, either by love or chains. Her solitude is partly chosen, partly instinctual, and she does have the capability of love and friendship, evident in her relationship with a small black dragon named Jel'ath'el.

But most importantly, her time in slavery taught her an important value. So as her shaggy wolf-paws or patherine form runs over rocks and long hidden trails, it's all in her love of the one thing her mother used to sing to her about, that which her mother sacrificed her life to give to her child. Freedom.

Sienna herself is from a world of my Leh'lah (sister, for non AE-speakers) and other's collaboration. You just _hafta_ see her pages -- they make up for my scrawny knowledge of HTML ;) -- TO the Silver Forest!
